Society Sucks

Mac sat next to him. "Its too long of a story. I don't even wanna talk about it," she whispered, looking down at her feet.

"Nobody wants to talk about these things Mac," Max sighed, truly upset. "But sometimes we have to. Tell you what, you tell me your story and I'll swap you for Xzavier's. Sounds fair right? Now sit down, and eat a nacho or two. You're going to starve to death."

Mac sighed and she's a single tear. "Back home in the UK, when I was just starting Kindergarten, I made a friend. She was my best friend in the world, and we did everything together. In the 2nd grade, she started making friends with the Populars and they told her that I cannot be their friend. I asked why, and they said because I was too fat and they only hang out with skinny people. Ever since then I was self-aware of everything and I tried to get fit but nothing worked. I wanted my friend back, but whenever I came near she would say, 'Go away fatty!'. Then one day in 7th grade, I was paired up with her in class and she blurted out, 'Oh so you put me with this fat loser?' And ever since then I refused to eat, and whenever I did I would purge. My dad was arrested the following year for drug dealing. Then my house blew up in flames, wrecking everything I had left. Don't even get me started on how I had a dog I grew up with die in the fire." Mac sobbed out her last words and turned to Max.

"Mac, I'm sorry that all of that had happened to you. But I can tell you two things. One, your friend is a total bitch and I hope she dies in a hole. She wasn't your friend to begin with if she deserted you for a bunch of popular people. Secondly, you are nowhere NEAR fat. You probably weren't to begin with. Xzavier likes you for you, not your body. And to be honest, guys like girls who are healthy, not freakishly skinny. We don't want to be afraid you'll break when we hug you," Max sighed, and pity shown in his eyes. "I'm really sorry for your dad, and your house, and your dog. But none of that was your fault Mac. None of it. And if you think being skinny makes you healthy, it doesn't. Healthy is being able to eat enough of the right foods to give your body energy."

Mac nodded and smiled faintly. "Your turn," she said.

"Alright then, but just remember if Xzavier kills me then it's not my fault. Or yours," Max laughed lightly, and began to tell the story. "About four years ago, Xzavier had an older sister. Her name was Wendy, and she was really nice. I used to come over all the time and remembered to joke around and flirt with her, she was only a year older than us," he chuckled. "You'd never realize that she had something wrong with her...she got perfect marks in all of her classes, captained the cheerleading squad, had tons of friends...." he trailed off, and took a deep breath. "Wendy starved herself. You couldn't tell because she always ate her meals in front of us, but then she'd go and throw up while everyone else was still eating. We didn't realize until it was too late...and we couldn't help her. Wendy was practicing for cheerleading when she exhausted herself and fainted. Xzavier walked in and found her an hour later, and then we rushed her to the hospital. The doctors couldn't help her in time, and that's when we learned what happened."

Mac looked down. "Why?" She was curious. She didn't want to ask, but she wanted to know, "If her life was so perfect, why did she do that?"

Mac sighed, and shook his head. "It wasn't perfect, Wendy was bullied pretty often, and didn't tell anyone about it. So instead of telling someone or getting help, or trying to get in shape the right way, she kept exercising without eating constantly. She climbed her way to the top of the tree of popularity, and kept herself from getting discovered by vomiting. Xzavier was crushed after that happened, and he can't stand it when people he knows do something like that. He was too scared to ask you about it because he thought you'd get offended."

"Oh," Mac said, "I'm sorry." She knew she would never eat the same, but she was willing to try. Mac cared about Xzavier and didn't want to hurt him.

"Look Mac, it's not your fault. But Xzavier and I are just looking out for you. So can you please try to go back and eat your nachos? For your own good?" Max pleaded, and shot her a look of sadness in his eyes.

Mac nodded. She took a bite of her nachos. "Even if I do choose to eat, it's not going to make me any healthier because my metabolism changed. It's what happens due to lack of food."

"Then you should have no problem eating then," Max smiled, and began walking back towards the bleachers. "Give it time, you'll be healthy as anyone else. But thank you for trying, it means a lot."

Mac smiled and followed him. "Hey Xzavior," Mac said, eating a nacho.

"H-Hey," he said casually, caught by surprise and sitting up straighter. "That took awhile. Are you guys alright?" Xzavier asked.
"Yeah bro, we're fine. Has the game started yet?" Max asked, sitting next to his friend and smiling.

"Not yet," he replied, "But it's about to. Sit down!"

"Alright," Mac smiled, leaning towards Xzavier. "So what's with the other school? Are they good?" Mac asked curiously, and ate another nacho. She was new to the school, so it was perfectly normal for her to ask about the rival teams.

"Yes," Xzavior smirked, "But we are totally better!" Mac smiled and replied, "Good." Mac stopped eating the nachos. She really didn't want to, so she had to trick then into thinking she'd eat again.
